What is the function of the ego?
Primarily, it is to enable souls who wish to separate from God to have an independent experience of God. In fact, everyone is always in God, but since the layers of ego separates one from God, one can think he/she is an independent being, he/she can do what he/she wants, God does not really exist, and he/she can invent for himself/herself various "meaningful" activities to spend his/her time on. All this together means that the soul in the state of separated from God is under an illusion when he/she thinks of himself/herself as independent of God. ...
